Program for Arts and Humanities Development

Program Overview

Students at a meeting. The Program for Arts and Humanities Development (PHD) is a research and mentoring program that serves Arts and Humanities majors from historically underrepresented groups from any U.S. college or university. The PHD focuses on providing developmental programming and support for students interested in pursuing graduate study in the Arts and Humanities. At The Ohio State University, the broad umbrella of the Arts and Humanities encompasses a range of exciting disciplines and specializations: African American and African Studies, Art, Art Education, Asian American Studies, Comparative Studies, Creative Writing, Dance, Disability Studies, East Asian Languages and Literatures, English, Film Studies, Folklore, French and Italian, Germanic Languages and Literatures, Greek and Latin, History, History of Art, Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication, Latino/a Studies, Linguistics, Literacy Studies, Music, Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, Philosophy, Sexuality Studies, Slavic and East European Languages and Literatures, Spanish and Portuguese, Theatre, and Women's Studies.

Over the course of the summer, the PHD provides guided coursework, research, mentoring, and cohort building. Moreover, PHD students will receive ongoing programmatic support at their home institutions. This unique structure provides students with the opportunity to gain foundational knowledge about graduate study in the Arts and Humanities and then build upon that foundation with discipline specific research.

The PHD summer institute is a nine-week program beginning June 21, 2009 and ending August 21, 2009.

The deadline for application to the Program for Arts and Humanities Development has been extended to February 10, 2009.
