About the Application: Please Read Carefully!

Completing program applications can be a complex process. Here is some information that should help make it simple and successful.
  • Begin the application process early!
  • Before beginning the application, check the eligibility requirements to make sure that you meet the necessary criteria. Gather your information before you begin the online application. To find out what information you will be asked to provide, take a look at our application example.
  • Read all instructions and follow them carefully. This includes keeping track of posted word counts and the application deadline (February 1, 2009).
  • Contact your recommenders as early as possible in order to give them ample time to complete the recommendation and submit it before the deadline. As part of the application process, you will be prompted to identify your recommenders online. The recommenders will then be contacted by email requesting their reference and sending them a link to upload it into our system. So make sure that you have the correct email and other recommender contact information. It may also be helpful to supply recommenders with a copy of your resume and work you completed in their class; this way, their recommendations can be as detailed as possible. Remember, faculty members are very busy, so be sure to give them the application deadline and send out periodic reminders about your recommendation.
  • When composing the purpose and personal statements, take care to pay particular attention to what is being asked and answer all parts of the prompt. Begin these early so as to have enough time to put them through a revision process. Also, ask a faculty member to read your work and give you feedback.
  • Requesting an official transcript is usually pretty simple, but it takes time for requests to be processed, so be sure not to wait until the last minute.
  • Be sure your resumé is up-to-date.
  • Finally, don't be afraid to ask questions (coh-phd@osu.edu).
