First job out of college: Curator, O S U Center for Epigraphical Studies

Wendy Watkins graduated with a B.A. from O S U in 1987 and then went to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and received an M.A. in Ancient History in 1990. She returned to Columbus where Stephen Tracy, one of her former professors in the Classics department, was setting up the Center for Epigraphical Studies (as it was called then) on West Campus. He heard about her return to Ohio and knew her academic background, so he recruited her for the new position of curator. At the time of her interview the position was not officially approved by O S U, so it was not until 1991 that she actually began working here at the Center. Ms. Watkins' duties include managing collections of books, offprints, squeezes, photographs, and other papers, managing the budget, coordinating the Center's post-doctoral fellowships, assisting students and scholars using the Center's resources, and speaking to visiting classes and other groups about the Center and epigraphy in general. She is also involved in a project to digitize the Center's squeeze collections for OhioLINK's Digital Media Center, which makes images of squeezes (accurate paper impressions of inscriptions) available to scholars around the world.
