D S A G Minutes from September 30

Introductions

Shari Lorbach was announced as the newly appointed advisor of DSAG. Shari introduced Debra Lowry as the new Assistant Dean of Student and Curricular Affairs of the College and Kelli Fickle a new attendee of DSAG meetings. Kelli will assist with meeting minutes.

Majors Picnic

Shari asked for volunteers for the Humanities Meet and Greet on Wednesday, September 29. A sign up sheet for volunteering was distributed.

Community Charitable Drive

Shari announced the need for volunteers to assist with Humanities bake sales for the drive this fall. Corey Ash in the Humanities office is the point person for the sales.

Updating Contact Information

A contact list was distributed amongst DSAG members for their review and updates.

Fireside Chats

Shari polled DSAG members for possible speakers for Fireside Chats. Ashley suggested Professor Phoebe Spinrad sharing her experience in the Air Force and interest in Vietnam. Leah suggested Roxann Wheeler, Professor of English, and Teresa named Daniel Collins, Professor of Slavic for his study of Dracula and vampires. Abbey suggested Kai Hammermeister, Professor of German and his interest in terrorism. Shari discussed possible chat dates and October 12 and 13 were noted. In addition, Shari encouraged DSAG members to brainstorm advertising ideas for the Fireside Chats.

Shari also mentioned the possibility of aligning with the Earth Share organization to create awareness about environmental issues and raise donations for CCD. The outline of the program could include a faculty member in History or English speaking about the environment and possibly a panel format. Sarah suggested involvement from the Students for Recycling program. Kyle, Adrienne and Sarah will connect with Corey Ash.

Study Abroad Panel

Sarah volunteered to contact Grace Johnson, Program Manager of the Office of International Education for additional information on organizing a panel.

Career Night

Shari discussed planning for Humanities Career Night. DSAG members will be encouraged to select locally employed alumni of humanities disciplines to participate in the annual event. Once alumni have been selected, Shari will confirm their attendance, and DSAG members will host the evening.

Minutes / Web site

Kelli Fickle will be responsible for the organization and posting of meeting notes for the Humanities Web site.

Student Issues

Shari encouraged DSAG members to consider student related topics and issues for their meeting with Dean Roberts.

Other

Humanities T-shirts were distributed to DSAG members.

ASC Alumni Advisory Council

Shari mentioned the formation of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences Alumni Advisory Council and the importance of DSAG's alignment with the group.

Humanities Alumni Society

Shari announced the reintroduction of the Humanities Alumni Society and encouraged DSAG to align with the Society as well.

Miscellaneous

Abbey mentioned the continued discussion regarding internet resources. Shari plans to ask Lewis Ulman, Director of Humanities Technology about the project.

Shari encouraged DSAG members to share their suggestions and ideas for the academic year.

Shari sent around a sign up sheet for Corey regarding the CCD bake sales.

The Exploration Fair will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2004, 3:30-6:00 p.m. in the Stecker Lounge of the Ohio Union. DSAG members are invited and encouraged to participate in the student panel of the majors fair.

Shari mentioned an additional volunteering opportunity with the Spanish and Portuguese Department and Westland High School collaborating with the Big Brothers-Big Sisters program. Sarah suggested distributing the message to undergraduates via the Humanities listserv. Shari plans to check on the use of the listserv.

Dean Lowry announced an informational meeting for undergraduate research opportunities in the Humanities. The meeting will be held on Thursday, September 30, 2004 at 3:00 pm in 156 University Hall. Programs such as the Undergraduate Research Colloquium and the National Conference for Undergraduate Research will be discussed.
