In attendance:

Introductions:

Individual introductions by name, department and class.
Who are D S A G? How and why are you here? Dean Roberts discussed these questions as well as past projects and hopes for the future of D S A G.

Main Purpose:

Begin planning and discussing Career Night
  • Shari Lorbach discussed the details and reasons for the event, past experiences, hopes
  • Discussed purpose and goal of the event- Q/A as panel, then break into smaller groups and mingle amongst the alumni, end with summary together
  • Discussed choosing the alumni representatives for diversity of background, enthusiasm and career interests/success
  • Discussed previous dinners and panel members
  • Shari passed out Alumni contact lists by departments, students to call.

Other Events Interested in Planning

Students discussed possible topics for Student-run, Student-helpful Seminar Series:
  • Study Abroad Information Seminar- students discuss their own experiences and helpful tips for others on how to get information, where to go, who to talk to about the traveling, possibly have representation from Study Abroad Office, look scheduling in January
  • Undergraduate Research Panel - information on expectations, how to plan, investigate research methods and applications, view previous thesis planning steps, summaries, develop online page with sharing the experience for those not able to attend the event, concerned with getting an early start on this so information is available before it is too late to take full advantage, Linda Harlow involvement suggested, N C U R, Denmen, how to choose and narrow a project
  • Internships - general information, possibly a list of companies usually willing to accept interns, different types of applications for humanities in the workplace, how to choose an internship position
  • Developing Relationships with Professors - possibly more geared to incoming and younger students(Freshman Q&A panel?), express importance of relationships; educationally and usefulness in networking, research procedures, recommendations, how to talk to professors positively
  • Interdisciplinary Programs - panels, to discuss different opportunities and how to use separate interests together, alumni discussions, Explorer program
  • Fireside Chats - suggested selected speakers tie discussion around a current event, mid-week monthly events in early evening suggested
  • Cultural Night - students expressed real interest in having more relaxed and fun events, "music night" have different themes possibly based on cultural interests

Students also expressed importance of trying to involve Graduate Students and trying to get involved and acquainted with Graduate level experience, what to look forward to and different possibilities

Closing Remarks:

Corinna expressed request for volunteers on behalf of the Community Charitable Drive, to sit and help with bake sale events, sign-up sheets were provided
