Karla Holloway

Karla F.C. Holloway, the William Rand Kenan Professor of English at Duke University, focuses in her research and teaching on African American cultural studies, biocultural studies, and ethics and law. She is the author of five books, including Passed On: African American Mourning Stories, a cultural and historic look at bereavement, death, dying, and burial in 20th-century African America; and Codes of Conduct: Race, Ethics and the Color of Our Character, a series of long essays covering topics such as Anita Hill's Senate testimony, Maya Angelou's poem for the presidential inauguration, and the moral lives of children. Professor Holloway has also published articles on "The Race for Theory," "The Death of Culture," and "The Body Politic."

She has been the recipient of three Outstanding Book Awards from Choice Magazine, and has received the Anna Julia Cooper Scholar Award from St. Augustine’s College; the Samuel DuBois Cook Pioneer Award from Duke University; the Outstanding Research Award and the Provost’s Professional Development Award from North Carolina State and has been a recipient of the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship. Professor Holloway received her Ph.D. in English and Linguistics from Michigan State University.
