President Karen Holbrook
The Ohio State University College of Humanities and the Humanities Institute annually host a public forum. The topic, while different each year, is selected to encourage dialogue and stimulate reflection on issues involving history, languages, and literatures, and on how individuals in different times and places have understood themselves and their environment.
This year, our Forum focuses on the future of public higher education in the United States, especially the landgrant research university. Its participants are Stanley Katz, Director of Princeton University's Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies; James Duderstadt, former president of the University of Michigan; and Peter Magrath, president of the National Association of State Universities and Landgrant Colleges.
Along with moderator Karen A. Holbrook, President of The Ohio State University, these panelists will consider such questions as how universities-especially landgrant universities-support the intellectual infrastructure of our country and the world, the degree to which higher education is perceived as an individual benefit rather than a public good, the priorities of public vs. private institutions, the long term effects of under funding, the impact of technology on the university of the future, and what Americans will expect of the landgrant research university in the decades to come.
The Forum has been selected to showcase the investiture of Dr. Holbrook as Ohio State's 13th president.
Please plan to read the article by panelist Stanley Katz appearing in the September 20, 2002 Chronicle of Higher Education that will serve as the basis for the Forum discussion: The Pathbreaking, Fractionalized, Uncertain World of Knowledge
