Humanities Program Spotlight:

Brown Endowment to Recognize Excellence in Teaching

The College is pleased to announce that alumna Susan E. Brown has generously established the Paul W. Brown Excellence in Teaching Award Endowment. Named in honor of her late father, the award will annually recognize faculty members in the Department of History and the Department of English.

Both father and daughter earned Bachelor's of Arts degrees and Doctor of Law degrees from Ohio State. Paul completed his undergraduate degree in English in 1937 and Susan completed her undergraduate degree in History in 1968. In 2006, Susan's great admiration for her father led her to establish the Justice Paul W. Brown Fund for the Center for the Study and Teaching to support the center's literacy outreach program.

Paul, a former Ohio Attorney General and Ohio Supreme Court Justice, was a lifelong supporter of the Buckeyes and a member of both the Ohio State University Alumni Association and the President's Club. The Youngstown, Ohio native served during World War II with the First Armored Division and was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. After the war, Paul practiced law in Youngstown. He entered public service when he was elected to the 7th District Court of Appeals, serving from 1960 to 1964. Later he was elected to the Ohio Supreme Court and from 1968 to 1970, served as Ohio's Attorney General. After retiring from the Supreme Court, he joined the firm of Thompson, Hine, and Flory and practiced law in Columbus until 1987. In September 1996, Paul was honored to be the first living Justice to have his portrait hung in the Supreme Court Chambers.

Truly her father's daughter, Susan's life has also been marked by great achievement, integrity, and leadership. We are grateful that she has chosen to honor the memory of her father in this meaningful way. The College of Humanities is touched by her generosity and welcomes the Paul W. Brown Excellence in Teaching Award into its family of endowments, allowing her father's legacy to live on in perpetuity at The Ohio State University.
