Humanities Alumni Spotlight:
Humanities Alumni Society Welcomes New President

Derek Welch
The College of Humanities Alumni Society (HUMAS) found itself in need of a new leader when
Lisa DiGiacomo decided to step down as its president due to an increase in her professional commitments. Treasurer
Derek Welch was ready to take the helm and was officially voted in by the board at their July meeting.
Craig Zimpher, HUMAS member and vice president for Nationwide Insurance commented on what Derek will provide as the new president of the organization, "Derek brings a high level of commitment to HUMAS and will live out that commitment through his energetic and inclusive leadership style."
Derek graduated from The Ohio State University in June 1997 with a B.A. in English. From there he went on to law school at the University of Cincinnati where he received his J.D. in June 2001 and was admitted to the Ohio bar that fall. Derek has spent time as an estate planning attorney and financial advisor, but the majority of his time is spent in Advanced Sales at Nationwide where he consults with clients about their estate planning and wealth transfer concerns. "Derek’s legal vocation and corporate work experience will lend themselves to efficiently managing HUMAS and taking it to the next level," adds Craig.
When he is not at work or following the Buckeyes, he spends time with his wife Kristen of nine years, their six-year-old daughter Kiernan, and son Tucker, who just turned three. After having spent the last few years on the HUMAS alumni board, he is looking forward to his time as president and working with the group to move forward and continue to bridge the relationship between current and future alumni members. Derek feels going forward that HUMAS events are going to be successful in bringing these groups together and providing scholarship funding for future humanities students.
In addition to congratulating Derek on his new role, the College of Humanities would also like to thank Lisa for her time and dedication in her role as president. Lisa has been a great leader of the Humanities Alumni Society and will remain as a member of the board.
