Humanities Alumni Spotlight:
Recognizing Literary Excellence of Ohio State Alumni

"The Golden Goose," by Cecilia Johnson
The Journal cover Issue 30.2, Fall/Winter 2006
Ohio has a wealth of home-grown literary talent, and no one knows that better than
The Journal, the award-winning, national literary magazine published by The Ohio State University
Department of English. For over 30 years,
The Journal has been printing the best writing by established and emerging authors, some of whom are publishing their first stories, literary essays, and poems in
The Journal's pages. Three years ago
The Journal editors, Ohio State creative writing faculty members
Kathy Fagan and
Michelle Herman, announced the first annual Alumni Flash Prose Writing Contest to honor Ohio State alumni.
Each year the contest draws entries from alumni from all areas of the university, and of all ages. A cash prize and publication in
The Journal goes to the person who submits the very best work. Professors Fagan and Herman instituted the writing contest to encourage alumni to reconnect with Ohio State and their own love for literature. "It's too easy to lose track of that," Herman says. "After people get busy with careers, with family, something that once mattered greatly can easily get misplaced. We want to welcome them home."
Professors Fagan and Herman are excited about this next round of finding the former buckeye with the best unpublished story or literary essay and are currently inviting submissions. Submissions must be postmarked by September 30, 2008 and can be either fiction or nonfiction, but must be under 1,000 words. In addition, all submissions must be anonymous, with the author’s name and contact information, along with title of the work in a separate cover letter. For additional information on how to submit your work, please visit the
contest Web site. All styles, subject matter, and forms are welcome. The first-place winner will once again receive $500 and publication in
The Journal alongside the work of such major writers as Cynthia Ozick, Floyd Skloot, and Brenda Hillman.
The Journal, originally titled The Ohio Journal, was founded in 1973 by William Allen of the English department at The Ohio State University, and has been published continuously ever since.
