Humanities Student Spotlight:
Greenwich Program in English Well Under Way

Members of the English department’s six-week Study Abroad Program in Greenwich pose before the London Eye, the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe.
The Department of English is currently conducting its annual six-week study abroad summer program at the University of Greenwich, England. This is the second offering of the program, directed this year by Associate Professors
Jared Gardner and
Elizabeth Hewitt. This year 21 students are enrolled, some featured above. At Greenwich, students take courses taught by British faculty in British Literature and Art and the Literature of London; they are also able to take full advantage of all that the university and the great city of London have to offer, from literary walks in and around London to an infinite range of art galleries and museums. The University of Greenwich is a World Heritage Site consisting of three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren; Greenwich itself is a beautiful town with a popular weekend market, a fine park, and the famous Old Royal Observatory.
Two weeks into the program, the directors have sent in the following interim report:
"We have sailed the river and walked the streets of the city, stalking Dickens to his house and Sherlock Holmes on his investigations, following Raleigh to the Tower of London and rolling around the Globe Theatre with The Merry Wives of Windsor. At the end of the week, there is to be a picnic in Greenwich Park, the oldest Royal Park in Britain. Today many of the students are off on an outing to the beaches of Brighton, while their professors pay homage to Samuel Johnson's house. And the fun is just beginning. The only thing to say against this city is that there is simply too much to see and do and I fear all our heads will explode before the six weeks are out."
The College wishes all the participants well, and is confident that all our summer study abroad programs will be similarly mind-expanding.
