Humanities Student Spotlight:

Humanities Scholars Welcome 70 New Students This Fall

///.
Seventy new Humanities Scholars arrive on campus this September, joining the current group of 200 scholars. Among this talented group of students, 27 are declared humanities majors with the other 43 expressing an interest in the liberal arts.

Humanities Scholars is a four-year co-curricular program and one of the 12 Scholars Programs on campus. First-year students arrive on September 17 and move into Haverfield House, the residence hall where all Humanities Scholars live together in their first year. First-year students are also matched up with peer mentors, upper-class students in the program who help guide them through their first year at Ohio State. Additionally, first-year scholars take two autumn quarter classes together (English 110 and the Humanities Survey). Scholars participate in co-curricular programs, such as cultural trips to major cities and humanities-themed locations in Ohio, as well as community service projects. Last year, the scholars traveled to Chicago and Toronto and visited the King Arts Complex for a gallery tour, for example. Additionally, the program provides students with opportunities to interact with humanities faculty outside of the classroom. Several College of Humanities faculty graciously volunteer their time to do book and film discussions with the scholars and lead “Dinner & Dialogue” programs. Emily Morris Carpenter, the Humanities Scholars program coordinator, manages all program aspects and also serves as an academic advisor for the scholars. This upcoming academic year is on track to be a successful one for the Humanities Scholars Program, with a major highlight being a study abroad trip to Paris during the spring break.
