Humanities Scholar Spotlight:

Hendrix Scholars Provide Leadership and Inspiration through Academic Excellence and Service

As a high school senior, Thomas Moosbrugger considered seeking admission to a program in Veterinary Medicine at various universities. When he received the offer of a College of Humanities Hendrix scholarship to study Ancient History, one of his favorite subjects, Moosbrugger became a Buckeye. Now a college senior and engaged honors student with majors in Ancient History and Anthropology, Moosbrugger looks back at that critical decision happily at the same time that he looks forward to participating in his next “dig.” Through the College of Humanities undergraduate scholarships program and the generosity of committed past and present donors, excellent students with multiple college options, like Moosbrugger, choose Ohio State to realize their professional aspirations and pursue their passions and dreams.

Currently, twenty-two Hendrix scholars receive annual awards disbursed from The George W. Hendrix and Elizabeth L. Hendrix College of Humanities Endowed Scholarship Fund. Hendrix scholars across the ranks pursue programs in a range of disciplines including Comparative Studies, Philosophy, German, English, and Linguistics. Recipients are recruited from among top high school students with exceptionally high scores on college entrance exams and profiles of promise. They are keenly interested in interdisciplinary work, often combining Humanities majors with majors in the social, behavioral, and biological sciences and incorporating relevant minors into their rigorous academic programs. Hendrix scholars provide leadership and promote service, participating actively in the intellectual and administrative life of the College as members of the Dean’s Student Advisory and by serving on a variety of College and University committees.

Caroline R. Sim, a freshman Hendrix Scholar and double major in English and Renaissance and Medieval Studies, is also a participant in the early admissions pathway program which provides early entrance into the College of Medicine for a select group of outstanding freshman students. As she prepares to pursue her professional goals beyond the undergraduate years, Caroline has planned a rich program of study which includes research in Germany, a semester abroad in Paris to enhance her French minor, and a senior thesis in her area of specialization.

College of Humanities scholarships draw exceptional students into our ranks and enrich the student experience in myriad ways. Hendrix scholars are the movers and shakers of the future and we salute them!
