Humanities Scholars in Boston 2005: Learning Well Beyond the Classroom

The Humanities Scholars Program is based on four pillars—academics, service, community, and leadership—around which all Scholars’ activities are centered. A trip to Boston during the weekend of May 20 is only the most recent example of how these pillars support the Scholars' programs. With Scholars students Jeff Rose and Josh Michalski leading its coordination, the Boston trip included 48 Humanities Scholars of all ranks. It was a learning opportunity, introducing these participants to a dynamic city that is an integral part of our nation’s history.

While in Boston, the Scholars studied Boston's key role in the formation of our country, visited the New England Aquarium, took a walk on the Freedom Trail, explored both the Black Heritage and the Irish Heritage trails, and rode the famous Boston duck boats.

A major component of the Boston trip was its emphasis on community service. Prior to leaving, all 48 students were engaged in community service at Columbus’s Ronald McDonald House, which provides a home-away-from-home for the families of seriously ill children being treated at nearby hospitals. In Boston these same students participated in a program partnered with Jumpstart, a nonprofit community service organization that helps prepare low-income preschoolers for success in school. All arrangements for community service were coordinated by Scholars students Britany Hoeffer and Sara Ridley.

A highlight of the trip was a special reception with alumni of Ohio State and the College of Humanities. This event allowed the Scholars to learn more about career options for Humanities majors and make connections that may prove to be invaluable in the future. Thanks to these experiences, the Humanities Scholars had access to educational opportunities that enrich and go beyond the scope of what they learn in the classroom.
