Humanities Scholars Spotlight:
Emily Morris has joined the College of Humanities as Humanities Scholars program coordinator. In this role, Morris will serve this group of about 250 undergraduate students by providing individualized academic advising, meaningful co-curricular programs, and support and guidance throughout their college education and career planning. Humanities Scholars share a common interest in the liberal arts, and many, but not all, are majoring in the humanities.
Most recently, Morris worked at the University of Maryland's Career Center as a program director, specifically advising students in the arts and humanities disciplines. She assisted students with researching and exploring careers related to their studies in the arts and humanities (frequently answering the question, "What can I do with this major?"), developing resumes, cover letters, and applications to graduate or professional school, and preparing for successful job searches and interviewing.
As the coordinator for Ohio State's Humanities Scholars, she hopes to maintain the program's past successes and strong sense of community among the students. Community service, leadership activities, and domestic excursions will continue to be special parts of the program. Morris says she also wants to increase the program's focus on the various disciplines within the humanities. Im currently exploring additional program options with humanities-focused organizations, she explains, adding that she would like the Scholars to have a diversity of cultural experiences.
By 2006, there will be 12 scholars programs on campus. Morris is eager that the Humanities Scholars program provide unique opportunities for students who have strong interests in literature, languages, philosophy, history, culture, and other humanities-related studies.
Morris is an Ohio State alumna, having earned her M.A. in Higher Education and Student Affairs in 2002. She obtained her bachelor's degree in communication from Ohio University. The College of Humanities is delighted that she has returned to Columbus and the Ohio State campus and is heading up its Scholars initiative.
