Welcome to the College of the Humanities' Web site. I invite you to explore its pages to learn about the faculty, staff, students and programs in the humanities at Ohio State. You will quickly discover why the Ohio State University is one of the most exciting places in the world to pursue an education in the humanities. Our programs offer students the opportunity to secure a world-class liberal arts education by choosing from twenty-five different majors housed in fourteen departments. In our increasingly global culture and economy, humanities faculty are uniquely positioned to provide students with a quality education by providing them with cultural knowledge and perspective that will be essential for success in the twenty-first century. Not only is ours one of the largest faculties of foreign language researchers and teachers in the world; we are also home to top scholars on cultural and expressive systems in virtually every part of the world; and the site of an outstanding cadre of recognized experts in world history and historical movements. The humanities are indeed the portal to a vast store of knowledge necessary to prepare our students to effectively deal with an increasingly globalized world and its impact on life in the twenty-first century.While we are proud of the high quality educational experience for which the College of Humanities has become well-known, we believe that it can be enhanced through closer collaboration with other disciplines. To achieve this goal, we are currently in the midst of effecting an administrative merger between humanities programs and those in the arts within a more tightly integrated College of Arts and Sciences. Within this new administrative configuration, we will be able to provide students in humanities with exciting new opportunities for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary study that will dramatically expand their perspectives and their possibilities for developing successful careers in the new global economy. The new opportunities that will emerge as a result of this transformation will further enhance the quality of the educational experience that we are able to offer students.
